Filing in context
The Computer (Emissions/Noise) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 9 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 52 Nissan notifications from 2013 in this archive. For scale, 394 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 7 months.
Defect
The engine control unit software is incorrectly calibrated, causing insufficient intake air volume during deceleration from high engine speeds with the throttle released. This allows unburned fuel to pass through the engine and combust inside the upstream exhaust catalyst, raising the catalyst to excessive temperatures and damaging it. The damaged catalyst generates abnormal noise from debris, and if fragments block the downstream catalyst, acceleration performance deteriorates. In the worst case, the engine may malfunction and stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control software to the corrected specification. Inspect the catalysts for damage and, if any abnormality is found, replace all four catalysts with new units.
