Filing in context

The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 39 Mazda notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 767 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years.

Defect

The wiring harness routing design for the controller of the automated manual transmission (AGS) on four-wheel-drive vehicles is improper, allowing the harness to contact the ribs of the transfer case. Driving vibration and related stress can damage the harness over time. In the worst case, the transmission may become unable to shift, the vehicle may become inoperable, or the engine may fail to start.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, inspect the wiring harness for damage. If no damage is found, add a protective case to the harness and re-route it correctly. If damage is found, replace the wiring harness with the corrected part.
