Defect
In the diesel engine, repeated low-speed acceleration and deceleration increases soot generated during combustion, which accumulates in the injector nozzle bores and degrades the fuel spray pattern. This causes soot production to increase further, allowing deposits to build up around the exhaust-side valve guides. As a result, the exhaust valves become difficult to move, causing poor acceleration and vehicle vibration due to reduced compression, and the engine warning light or glow lamp indicator illuminates. In the worst case, the engine may stall.
Corrective action
Owners are notified of the defect and instructed to bring the vehicle in for inspection promptly if the engine warning light illuminates or the glow lamp indicator flashes. Upon inspection, the engine control computer and related components are inspected, the exhaust valve springs and injectors are replaced at no charge, and soot accumulated in the engine and DPF (diesel particulate filter) is cleaned.
