Filing in context

The Engine Control Unit is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 3 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 39 Mazda notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 1,387 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 8 months.

Defect

On vehicles equipped with the i-ELOOP regenerative braking energy recovery system, the DC-DC converter control program is incorrect. When an electrical circuit fault occurs, the i-ELOOP warning lamp illuminates and the i-stop warning lamp flashes, and a bypass mode activates to cut current flow. However, pressing the push-button start to turn the ignition off may cancel this bypass mode. Continued operation under this condition may cause a short circuit within the DC-DC converter, leading to a charging failure, battery discharge, and engine stall. In the worst case, a vehicle fire may occur.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, the engine control unit is inspected. If an abnormality is found in the DC-DC converter, the DC-DC converter is replaced with a new part and the engine control unit is reprogrammed with the corrected/updated software. If no abnormality is found, the DC-DC converter and engine control unit are both reprogrammed with the corrected/updated software.
