Filing in context
The Shock Absorber is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 16 Subaru notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 411 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 11 months.
Defect
On the front strut, the clamping torque at the upper strut mounting was not adequately evaluated for loosening resistance. Impacts such as curb strikes may cause the mounting nut to loosen. Continued use allows play to develop at the mounting point, leading to damage and abnormal noise.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the mounting nut with the corrected part and retorque the fastener. If damage is found at the mounting point, replace the front strut with a new unit.
