Filing in context
The Airbag is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 225 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 16 Subaru notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 168 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 11 months.
Defect
In the passenger-seat dual-stage deployment airbag inflator, moisture protection of the propellant is inadequate. Repeated cycles of temperature and humidity variation cause the propellant to deteriorate. As a result, when the airbag deploys, the inflator housing may rupture.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the passenger airbag inflator with a corrected part. If the corrected part is not yet available, replace the inflator with a new production unit as an interim measure, or disable the passenger airbag function and display a warning on the passenger sun visor indicating that the airbag is inoperative.
