Filing in context
The Cooling System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 34 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 16 Subaru notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 400 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 11 months.
Defect
The engine water pump has an insufficient assembly clearance at the bearing section. This may cause the bearing to fail and the water pump to stop functioning. As a result, the timing belt sustains damage, and continued operation may cause the engine to stall and become unable to restart.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the water pump will be replaced with a corrected part.
