Filing in context
The Other (electrical equipment) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 23 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 18 Honda notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 310 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 6 months.
Defect
In the capacitor-based idling stop system, the overcurrent protection for the internal elements of the step-up/step-down charge-discharge converter — which controls the capacitor charge and discharge voltage — is insufficient. During restart from an idling stop, overcurrent may flow into the converter and damage its internal elements. Continued use causes the damaged elements to generate heat, carbonizing surrounding resin material and sustaining current flow, leading to smoke and heat generation. In the worst case, a vehicle fire may occur.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the step-up/step-down charge-discharge converter with a corrected part.
