Filing in context
The Fuel Hose / Pipe is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 62 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 18 Honda notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 750 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 9 months.
Issue
The fuel tray drain tube routing and fuel tray shape are improperly designed, allowing sand and debris to clog the fuel tray drain tube. As a result, water from rain driving or car washing may enter the fuel tank. If the fuel pump draws in this water, engine malfunction may occur. Additionally, the intruding water causes rust to form at the bottom of the fuel tank. Continued use allows the rust to progress and, in the worst case, fuel may leak.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the fuel tray shape is corrected, the fuel lid or step floor is replaced with a corrected part, and the fuel tray drain tube is removed. The interior of the fuel tank is then inspected; if water intrusion is confirmed, the fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel injectors, and fuel hose are replaced with new parts.
