Defect

On engines used in heavy trucks and buses, manufacturing variation in the oil pump causes the pump's gear shaft to tilt. This accelerates wear on the gear tooth surfaces. Continued operation can lead to gear breakage, reducing oil pressure supplied to the engine. In the worst case, engine seizure may occur, resulting in a breakdown on the road or a vehicle fire.

Corrective action

On all affected vehicles, as an interim measure, measure the noise level near the oil pump; if gear tooth surface wear is determined to be present, replace the pump with a corrected/revised part. Detection criteria for gear shaft misalignment (shaft tilt) will begin under this interim measure to ensure reliable improvement in the field, and will be confirmed for reliability before transitioning to a permanent measure.
