Overview

Defect

On engines used in heavy trucks and buses, the engine oil change interval was set without sufficient consideration for severe operating conditions, causing engine oil to degrade earlier than the specified interval under demanding use. Continued operation allows sludge — combustion soot and oil degradation deposits — to accumulate in the oil mist separator, causing a clog. This raises crankcase internal pressure and forces engine oil into the intake system. In the worst case, engine speed may rise unintentionally and the engine may sustain serious damage.

Corrective action

On all affected vehicles: measure crankcase internal pressure; if the oil mist separator is determined to be clogged, replace it with a new unit and replace the engine oil and oil filter. If severe operating conditions are identified, replace the engine oil and oil filter regardless. On vehicles whose engine control software does not include an engine over-speed prevention function, add the corrected over-speed prevention program. Additionally, update the maintenance booklet to specify the oil change interval for severe conditions, and advise owners of the importance of engine oil maintenance.
