Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mitsubishi & Nissan.
The Fuel pump is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 37 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 56 Mitsubishi notifications from 2015 in this archive. For scale, 99 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 1 month.
Defect
During manufacturing, inadequate fuel flow control results in some fuel pumps delivering insufficient fuel flow. Separately, an inadequate control program in the engine control unit (engine ECU) may cause excessive fuel injection quantity. Compounded by an incorrect spark plug specification that promotes plug fouling, these conditions may cause extended cranking time or inability to start the engine.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the engine ECU with the corrected/updated software. Depending on vehicle classification, if improvement of the fuel pump or spark plugs is required, inspect both components; replace the fuel pump with a conforming unit and replace the spark plugs with the revised-specification parts.
