Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 3 manufacturers: Mazda, Nissan & Suzuki.
The Automatic Transmission (A/T) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 19 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 27 Mazda notifications from 2015 in this archive. For scale, 2,012 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 months.
Defect
On automated manual transmissions, incomplete draining of inspection oil used during standalone operational testing leaves residual oil inside the transmission. When the specified oil volume is added during vehicle assembly, total oil quantity exceeds the specified level. Sustained high-speed driving then causes oil temperature to rise, damaging internal transmission components. Heat from the overheated transmission may also damage the surrounding wiring harness. In the worst case, the vehicle may become inoperable or the engine may fail to restart.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect for oil ejection from the transmission breather and verify the amount of oil in the transmission. If oil is being ejected from the breather, replace the transmission, actuator, and surrounding wiring harness with new parts, then refill with the correct oil quantity. If excess oil is present but no ejection has occurred, replace the transmission and surrounding wiring harness with new parts, then refill with the correct oil quantity.
