Defect

On light-duty trucks, the waterproofing applied to the 12V and 24V terminals of the battery equalizer is inadequate. When conductive substances such as road de-icing agents contact these terminals, current flows between the terminals and the battery equalizer case, causing electrochemical corrosion. Continued use under these conditions may cause a short circuit at the affected terminals. In the worst case, the plastic components surrounding the terminals and the wiring may emit smoke or catch fire.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, apply high-viscosity grease to the 12V and 24V terminals of the battery equalizer and add a water-resistant plastic cover over each terminal. If severe electrochemical corrosion at the 12V or 24V terminals prevents secure attachment of the wiring, replace the battery equalizer and wiring with new parts. On vehicles where bodywork or equipment interferes with installation of the plastic cover, omit the cover and apply adhesive bond in place of high-viscosity grease.
