Defect
The assembly process for the switch sleeve within the brake booster's brake assist mechanism was performed improperly, causing cracks to develop in some switch sleeves. The brake assist mechanism senses emergency braking based on pedal depression speed and force, then increases hydraulic pressure to generate greater braking force. When the brake assist mechanism activates, the cracked switch sleeve tab may fracture, leaving the brake pedal unable to return and preventing the vehicle from moving.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, verify the brake booster serial number and, where applicable, replace the brake booster with a conforming unit.
