Defect

On vehicles equipped with a direct-injection turbocharged engine, an incorrectly programmed engine control unit (ECU) allows pre-ignition to occur during high-load operation, which may damage the spark plugs and pistons. This causes a warning light to illuminate and vehicle vibration to develop. In the worst case, the engine may stall.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control unit with the corrected/updated software. Additionally, inspect the vehicle; if any abnormality is found, replace the spark plugs or the engine with a conforming unit.
