Filing in context
The Parking brake is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 7 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 13 Subaru notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 383 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 5 months.
Defect
In the electric parking brake control unit, improper handling of the circuit board during parts manufacturing causes some board-mounted components to have insufficient strength. Separately, improper design and manufacturing controls for certain sensor components also result in insufficient strength in those parts. During vehicle service life, these deficient components or sensors may fail, illuminating a warning light. This failure may prevent the electric parking brake from engaging, or may cause unintended momentary parking brake activation at low speeds.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the electric parking brake unit with the corrected part.
