Defect
The engine control unit software is incorrectly programmed, causing the catalytic converter deterioration diagnostic to malfunction. As a result, the warning light may fail to illuminate even when the catalytic converter has degraded.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control unit software. Additionally, inspect the catalytic converter and, if abnormalities are found, replace the affected exhaust pipe section with a corrected part.
