Filing in context
The Headlamp is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 10 Subaru notifications from 2020 in this archive. For scale, 409 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 2 months.
Defect
On HID headlamps (low-beam), a specific combination of bulb and reflector specifications causes the ultraviolet light emitted by the bulb to accelerate deterioration of the reflective surface. Continued use causes the aluminum vapor deposition on the reflective surface to peel away, gradually reducing light intensity. In the worst case, the lamp fails to conform to Safety Standards Article 32 (Headlamp Standards).
Corrective action
Replace the bulb on all vehicles with a corrected part. Then inspect the headlamp light intensity. On any vehicle that does not meet the specified light intensity, replace the headlamp body with a corrected part.
