Defect
The fuel gauge circuit is improperly designed. Heat from the instrument cluster lighting causes the circuit board inside the cluster to repeatedly expand thermally, which may result in a broken wire in the circuit. This causes the fuel gauge to read higher than the actual fuel level, preventing the driver from recognizing that fuel has been exhausted. In the worst case, the engine may stall while driving and be unable to restart.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add an auxiliary circuit to the fuel gauge circuit.
