Filing in context

The Computer (Emissions/Noise) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 9 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 41 Nissan notifications from 2012 in this archive. For scale, 1,300 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 11 months.

Defect

On diesel-powered vehicles equipped with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), the engine control computer uses incorrect PM (particulate matter, including black smoke) regeneration logic. Repeated short-distance driving causes excessive PM accumulation. Despite PM levels reaching the regeneration-prohibited threshold, the flawed control logic still initiates automatic regeneration, which burns off the trapped particulates. Continued operation under these conditions causes the DPF to reach extremely high temperatures during automatic regeneration. In the worst case, the DPF may be damaged and emit black smoke.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control computer. Inspect the DPF and, if damage is found or suspected, replace it with a new part.
