Filing in context
The Computer (Emissions/Noise) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 9 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 50 Nissan notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 605 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 4 months.
Defect
The engine control computer software is improper. When the rear oxygen sensor, which provides supplemental air-fuel ratio control, is damaged, the warning light does not illuminate. Additionally, ignition noise generated by the ignition coil may damage the rear oxygen sensor element; in this case as well, the warning light does not illuminate. Continued use in this condition degrades supplemental air-fuel ratio control accuracy, and exhaust emissions may fail to meet regulatory standards.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control computer software. On vehicles whose ignition coil spring does not include a resistor, replace the spring with a resistor-equipped spring and replace the oxygen sensor with a new unit.
