Filing in context

This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mitsubishi & Nissan.

The Seat Belt is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 55 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 80 Mitsubishi notifications from 2013 in this archive. For scale, 1,140 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 months.

Defect

The front seat belt retractor is manufactured using an improper method for the locking mechanism, allowing the press-fit joint to loosen. A loose press-fit joint may produce abnormal noise or cause the belt to catch during fastening and unfastening. Continued use in this condition can cause the press-fit component to separate entirely and, in the worst case, the seat belt lock will fail to engage in a collision.

Corrective action

Inspect the seat belts on all vehicles. Where the press-fit joint is not loose, install a loosening-prevention part inside the retractor. Where the press-fit joint is found loose, replace the seat belt assembly with a conforming unit.
