Filing in context
The Turn Signal is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 21 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 80 Mitsubishi notifications from 2013 in this archive. For scale, 1,927 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 9 months.
Defect
The ETACS ECU program — which controls the turn signals, hazard warning lamps, and related functions — is inappropriate. When the electric tailgate is operated, the hazard answerback (confirmation of operation receipt via hazard lamp flashing) may fail to activate. When this occurs, subsequent turn signal lever operation will not illuminate the turn signals.
Corrective action
Reprogram the ETACS ECU on all vehicles with the corrected software. Because parts supply for the remedy requires additional time, as an interim measure all owners will be notified of the condition and, until the replacement parts are available, asked to manually operate the hazard warning lamp switch after using the electric tailgate and before driving.
