Overview

Defect

On medium-duty trucks and medium- and large-sized buses, the center head bolts of the air compressor are insufficiently torqued. Pressure pulsation from piston reciprocation can crack the seat gasket, which seals the coolant passage from the air passage inside the compressor. Coolant then intrudes into the air passage, producing two failure modes. First, coolant is carried through the air lines and discharged from the compressed air dryer, causing the coolant level to drop and a warning lamp to illuminate; continued use restricts engine output. Second, heat generated during air compression evaporates the coolant, leaving crystallized deposits that adhere to the intake and discharge valves, reducing airflow and causing air pressure to drop; a warning buzzer sounds and a warning lamp illuminates, and continued use prevents sufficient air pressure from being maintained, impairing brake function and potentially causing a roadside breakdown.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the air compressor head assembly with the corrected part and perform the following additional measures: on units where coolant intrusion into the air passage is confirmed, replace the compressor piston and cylinder liner with new parts and overhaul the air dryer; inspect the air system and, where coolant contamination is found, flush the air system and replace any damaged components with new parts.
