Filing in context
The Engine (main unit) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 21 Toyota notifications from 2012 in this archive. For scale, 626 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years.
Defect
Certain connecting rod bolts inside the engine have insufficient strength. Degradation byproducts in aged engine oil may attack these bolts and cause them to fracture. A fractured bolt may damage the engine, rendering the vehicle inoperable or, in the worst case, causing a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the connecting rod bolts with the corrected parts. Additionally, notify vehicle owners of the importance of performing regular engine oil changes.
