Filing in context
The Engine is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 72 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 54 Nissan notifications from 2010 in this archive. For scale, 2,689 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 7 months.
Defect
The flange of the fixed shaft on the camshaft-drive head idler gear in the engine has insufficient strength. Use of degraded engine oil or similar conditions accelerates bush wear, causing play to develop between the bush and the fixed shaft. Continued operation allows excessive stress to concentrate at the base of the flange, which may fracture and cause the gear to interfere with surrounding components. In the worst case, the gear disengages, the engine stalls, and the vehicle cannot be restarted.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the fixed shaft with a corrected part having an increased flange thickness, and replace the complete idler gear assembly with a new unit.
