Filing in context
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Shift Lever/Pedal as the affected component. This filing is one of 86 Mitsubishi notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 2,964 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 months.
Defect
The manufacturing process for the bolt that secures the transmission control cable to the automatic transmission shift control lever is incorrect, leaving some bolts with insufficient strength. The bolt may crack during torquing, and continued use causes the cable attachment position to shift so that the displayed shift position no longer matches the actual lever position. In the worst case, the bolt may fracture, the cable may detach, gear selection may become impossible, and the vehicle may become inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the shift control lever assembly with one fitted with a conforming bolt.
