Filing in context

The Propeller Shaft is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 52 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 86 Mitsubishi notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 4,782 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 7 months.

Defect

On large buses equipped with a hydraulic retarder (auxiliary braking device), the structure of the propeller shaft connection (end yoke) is inadequate. The stopper that prevents the cross-joint (spider) bearing from pulling out of the end yoke may wear through repeated stop-and-go operation, or may be damaged during propeller shaft assembly. Continued use causes bearing play to develop, resulting in excessive propeller shaft vibration. In the worst case, the bearing retainer or mounting bolts fracture and the propeller shaft detaches from the vehicle.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the end yoke and spider assembly with the corrected part.
