Filing in context
The Fuel Tank is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 79 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 69 Nissan notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 22 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 years and 8 months.
Defect
The fuel tank is improperly secured to the vehicle body, concentrating stress at the upper corner edges. Repeated thermal expansion and contraction may cause cracks to develop at these locations. Continued use allows the cracks to propagate and, in the worst case, perforate the tank, causing fuel to seep out when the tank is full.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add washers between the mounting bands and the vehicle body, reinforce the cracked area with adhesive resin, and apply an adhesive patch.
