Filing in context
The Door is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 103 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 4 Subaru notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 776 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 10 months.
Defect
Defective crimping is present at the pivot point of the door-opening lever on the rear door exterior handle, causing the lever to fail to return fully when the door is closed and leaving the latch incompletely secured. Vehicle vibration during driving can then cause the latch to disengage from the striker and, in the worst case, allow the door to open while the vehicle is in motion. This record supplements notification number 1462, filed on July 6, 2005; the chassis number range, production period, and total number of vehicles subject to that recall are being expanded to correct an error in the original scope of affected vehicles.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the lever operation is inspected. Any unit that does not operate normally is replaced with a complete rear door exterior handle assembly.
