Filing in context
The Door is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 103 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 4 Subaru notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 534 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 3 months.
Defect
The pivot point of the door opening lever on the rear door exterior handle is improperly crimped on some units. As a result, when the door is closed, the lever may fail to return fully, leaving the latch not securely engaged. Vibration during vehicle operation may then cause the latch to disengage from the striker, and in the worst case, the rear door may open while the vehicle is in motion.
Corrective action
On all affected vehicles, inspect the lever operation. If the lever does not operate normally, replace the complete rear door exterior handle assembly with a conforming replacement part.
