Filing in context
The Exhaust Gas Reduction Device is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 4 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 2,191 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 8 months.
Defect
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) pipe has insufficient strength. Thermal expansion and contraction from exhaust heat, combined with engine vibration, can cause cracks to develop in the pipe. Continued operation allows the cracks to propagate, increasing abnormal noise. In the worst case, high-temperature exhaust gas expelled through the cracks into the engine compartment may activate the fire alarm installed within that compartment.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the EGR pipe with the corrected part.
