Filing in context
The Engine is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 72 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 3,410 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 10 months.
Defect
On heavy-duty trucks equipped with an automatic transmission, the flywheel that transmits engine torque to the torque converter was manufactured with an improper shape. Operating the engine at high RPM generates excessive stress at the flywheel base, which can cause a crack to form. Continued use allows the crack to propagate and, in the worst case, the flywheel base fractures, interrupting power transmission and rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the flywheel with the corrected part.
