Filing in context
The Spring / Air Suspension is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 27 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 2,954 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 1 month.
Defect
On the leaf-air combination suspension, the mounting structure and tightening torque of the U-bolts securing the leaf spring to the front axle are incorrect. During cornering and similar maneuvers, excessive twisting force is applied to the U-bolts, causing cracks to develop. Continued use allows the U-bolts to fracture and, in the worst case, the suspension may shift off the front axle, compromising driving stability.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the U-bolt mounting components. If the corrected parts have not been installed, replace the U-bolts and mounting components with corrected parts. If corrected parts are already installed, replace the U-bolts and nuts with new ones.
