Overview

Defect

The clamping structure of the rubber-backed bracket securing the fuel injection pump injection lines is improperly designed. As the rubber deteriorates, the mounting bolt and nut loosen and may fall off. If a dropped bolt or nut becomes lodged between the starter motor and its terminal, a short circuit occurs. In the worst case, the starter harness may be damaged and the engine may become unable to start, or a vehicle fire may result.

Corrective action

Apply the following corrective measures based on the bracket's mounting configuration. (1) Where the bracket is secured by a bolt, replace it with a corrected part that includes a spring washer and adhesive applied to the bolt thread. (2) Where the bracket is secured by a nut, replace the flanged nut with a non-flanged nut, add a spring washer, apply adhesive to the stud bolt threads, and tighten to the specified torque. Additionally, inspect the condition of the bracket rubber and replace deteriorated rubber with a new part. Affix a caution plate describing maintenance precautions to the top of the engine. On vehicles not equipped with a rubber short-circuit protection cover on the starter motor terminal, install the rubber cover.
