Filing in context
The Fuel Hose / Pipe is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 62 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 70 Mitsubishi notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 4,748 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 10 months.
Defect
The clamping structure of the rubber-backed bracket that secures the fuel injection pump delivery pipes is incorrect. As the bracket rubber deteriorates, the mounting bolts and nuts loosen and may fall off. If a dropped bolt or nut becomes lodged between the starter motor body and its terminal, a short circuit occurs, which may damage the starter harness, causing a no-start condition or, in the worst case, a vehicle fire. Note: This recall supplements notification nos. 1254 (September 29, 2004) and 1443 (June 1, 2005), which contained errors in the affected vehicle selection; additional vehicles have been identified and are covered under this new filing.
Corrective action
Correct the bracket mounting structure according to the applicable configuration: (1) Where the bracket is secured by a bolt, replace with the corrected part incorporating a spring washer and adhesive applied to the bolt threads. (2) Where the bracket is secured by a nut, replace the flanged nut with a non-flanged nut, add a spring washer, apply adhesive to the stud bolt threads, and torque to specification. Additionally, inspect the condition of the bracket rubber and replace with a new part if deterioration is found. Attach a maintenance caution label to the top surface of the engine.
