Filing in context

The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,329 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 month.

Defect

The interior electrical wiring is improperly routed and secured, and assembly variation has left insufficient clearance between the wiring and the hood lock release handle bracket on some vehicles. The bracket's mounting screw has abraded the wire insulation on affected units. Vibration during driving causes the wiring to contact the screw and, in the worst case, the resulting short circuit blows the fuse, causing turn signal failure, speedometer malfunction, and related electrical faults.

Corrective action

Inspect the affected wiring on all vehicles. Where clearance is insufficient, reroute the wiring to establish adequate clearance. Where the wiring is damaged, repair it if possible; replace it with a new harness if repair is not possible.
