Filing in context
The Steering Linkage is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 45 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 935 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 7 months.
Defect
The ball stud of the knuckle arm has insufficient strength. Repeated stationary steering or high-frequency steering operation may cause cracks to develop in the ball stud. Continued use in this condition may cause the ball stud to fracture, resulting in loss of steering control.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the knuckle arm with the corrected part. Because full supply of corrected parts requires time, as an interim measure, inspect the knuckle arm ball stud for cracks and replace any cracked units with the corrected part immediately. Vehicles with no cracks will have their knuckle arms replaced with corrected parts at a later date.
