Filing in context
The Steering Linkage is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 45 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 1,377 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 10 years and 2 months.
Defect
Insufficient clamping force at the tie rod end clamp allows suspension movement to generate bending and twisting forces on the tie rod threads, causing the threads to wear and develop play. Continued use in this condition may cause the tie rod end to pull out or the tie rod to fracture. In the worst case, loss of steering control results.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the complete tie rod assembly with the corrected part. As an interim measure while full parts supply is pending, inspect the tie rod end for play. If play is present, replace with the corrected part immediately. If no play is found, replace with the corrected part at a later date.
