Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 17 Honda notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 2,462 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 months.
Defect
The method used to protect the vehicle body wiring is inadequate. During wiring assembly, the insulation on some harnesses was damaged by contact with the cut edges of pipe frame members. Continued use in this condition allows driving vibration to bring the damaged wiring into contact with the body, causing a short circuit. The resulting blown fuse may cause the engine to stall suddenly, the brake lights to stop illuminating, or other portions of the electrical system to become inoperative.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, dress and smooth the cut edges of the pipe frame members. Inspect the affected wiring on all vehicles; replace any harness with damaged insulation with a corrected wiring assembly. Where insulation is undamaged, add a protective tube.
