Filing in context
The Other (Safety Lighting) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 13 Mazda notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 754 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 months.
Defect
The lighting switch contains two separate defects. First, improper assembly of the electrical wiring allows the wiring to detach from the connector or contact the turn signal lever cover during repeated lever operation, causing a broken wire. This may result in the headlights, parking lights, and fog lamps failing to illuminate. Second, improperly plated switch contacts wear abnormally during repeated turn signal lever operation. Conductive wear debris may short the circuit, keeping the turn signals continuously activated.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, verify the chassis number and lighting switch, and replace the lighting switch unit with a corrected part on all affected vehicles.
