Filing in context
The Other (Safety Lighting) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 32 Mazda notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 1,359 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 1 month.
Defect
On the lighting switch of the lighting system, an excessive amount of grease was applied to the movable contact area on some vehicles. This grease may migrate into the wiring insulation, causing it to harden. Repeated operation of the turn signal switch may then cause the wiring insulation to crack. In the worst case, the conductor wire may break, causing the headlamps, parking lamps, tail lamps, and instrument panel illumination to fail.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, verify the vehicle identification number. On vehicles identified as subject to this recall, replace the lighting switch with a corrected part.
