Filing in context

The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 12 Hino notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 4,312 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 7 months.

Defect

The battery wiring routed inside the right side frame is improperly arranged. Driving vibration causes the wiring to contact the clips securing the nylon tubing used in the brake control system. Continued operation damages and short circuits the wiring insulation, burning the wiring and the nylon tubing. In the worst case, air may leak from the nylon tubing, triggering the air leak warning and causing loss of braking, while the spring brake safety system activates and renders the vehicle inoperable. (Note: This notification adds newly identified subject vehicles to the recall filed on January 24, 2003, as Notification No. 913.)

Corrective action

On all vehicles, secure the battery wiring and adjacent chassis wiring individually with clips to maintain adequate clearance from the clips securing the nylon tubing.
