Filing in context
The Continuously variable transmission is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 3 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 4 Subaru notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 453 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 9 months.
Defect
Insufficient tightening torque on the bolts securing the bearing retainer plate inside the automatic transmission may allow the bolts to loosen over time, producing abnormal noise. In the worst case, the bolts fall out and become lodged in the reduction gear, or the transmission case is damaged, causing an oil leak and rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the bolts for looseness through a newly provided inspection port. Replace any transmission with loose bolts with a non-defective automatic transmission unit. On transmissions where the bolts are not loose, apply adhesive to the bolts and secure them in place.
