Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
The Accelerator is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 34 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 12 Mazda notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 437 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 months.
Defect
In the accelerator system, the fit dimensions between the pedal pin—which connects the accelerator pedal to the accelerator cable—and the cable end clip that secures the cable end are incorrect. This causes the joint to bind rather than rotate smoothly. Continued use in this condition causes the inner cable to bend repeatedly under pedal operation. In the worst case, the cable fractures and the vehicle becomes inoperable.
Corrective action
Replace the accelerator cable on all vehicles with the corrected/revised part.
