Filing in context
The Starting System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 13 Suzuki notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 154 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 11 months.
Defect
The ignition switch contact structure is inadequate. In vehicles subjected to an extremely high frequency of switch operation, wear debris generated during use accumulates near the contacts and creates an unintended electrical connection. Continued operation in this condition causes the starter motor to run continuously while the switch contacts overheat, generating an abnormal odor and smoke from the accumulated debris. In the worst case, a vehicle fire may occur.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the ignition switch with a corrected part.
