Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 3 manufacturers: Mazda, Nissan & Subaru.
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Other (Miscellaneous) as the affected component. This filing is one of 10 Mazda notifications from 2000 in this archive. For scale, 1,854 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 months.
Defect
On automatic transmission vehicles, the pin that secures the key cylinder cap is improperly pressed in on some units. Continued use causes the pin to back out when the ignition key is removed, allowing the cap to fall off. As a result, the engine may be started even though the steering lock is engaged. In the worst case, the vehicle may be driven without steering control.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the key cylinder. If the cap retaining pin has backed out, replace the assembly with a conforming part. On units showing no abnormality, install a pin-retention ring at that location.
