Filing in context
The Engine is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 72 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 19 Honda notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 419 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 2 months.
Issue
In the engine, inadequate manufacturing process controls for the crankshaft allow residual material to adhere to the pulley bolt threads, reducing bolt clamping force. Continued use under this condition may cause the bolt to loosen and produce abnormal noise. In the worst case, the accessory-drive belt disengages from the crankshaft pulley, illuminating the charge warning light and increasing steering effort.
Corrective action
Replace the pulley mounting bolt on all vehicles with the corrected part. Inspect the crankshaft and key; if damage is found at those locations, replace with corrected parts.
