Defect
An improper machining process used during manufacture of the high-pressure fuel pump components in hybrid vehicles allows metal shavings to become lodged between a pump component and the machining fixture. This causes a crack to form at the machined end face. Continued use allows pump operating vibration to propagate the crack through the component, which may result in a fuel leak.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, measure the hydrocarbon concentration near the high-pressure fuel pump. Vehicles exceeding the specified concentration limit will have the pump replaced with a corrected part.
